Red Handle Rusty Flange by Dan Toone transforms industrial remnants into fluid, expressive form.
What begins as a rigid, functional object evolves into smooth, unrestrained lines that feel almost organic. The sculpture retains hints of its original identity while moving beyond it, creating a balance between structure and freedom.

Toone’s process often starts with found materials or leftover fragments from previous work. A shape or detail draws his attention, becoming the starting point for exploration. From there, the piece develops intuitively, guided by both the material and the artist’s response to it.
Surface and contrast play a central role in the finished work. Rusted steel interacts with elements of stainless steel or aluminum, creating variation in color, texture, and reflectivity. Each piece develops its own character through this process, resulting in a sculpture that feels distinct and alive.
For Toone, creating sculpture is both a craft and a source of joy. His work reflects a sense of curiosity and play, where experimentation leads to discovery. That spirit carries through to the viewer, offering a moment of engagement that is both visual and emotional.

Inquire about this piece
This stainless steel sculpture features small pieces of tubing spiraling gracefully around a central stainless steel post. Each piece of tubing decreases in size. The progression from larger pieces to smaller delicate pieces twist and coil around the post in an elegant spiral. The matte finish of the steel gives the sculpture a subtle, refined texture, softening the otherwise reflective nature of stainless steel. The size of the piece makes it a focal point, perfect for a contemporary space indoors or a striking garden piece outdoors.

Seasons – 2024

$10,050 – 96” X 20” X 14” – Steel
I enjoy taking what is normally rigid and structural steel and forming it into smooth, unrestrained, flowing lines, shapes, and forms. Inspired by a discarded scrap piece, the concept for “Seasons” came from the thought of the four seasons we enjoy here. The mirror-finished sphere reflects the ever-changing beauty of its surroundings.
Sentinel – 2023

I originally made a small version of this. I liked the simple lines and feel of it, and thought it would be fun to try it in a monument size. Using a rust patina is always interesting, as every piece of metal will take it a little differently. That’s where the individual personality of the sculpture comes through.
Within A Dream – 2022

It’s always a fun challenge to take an object that had been used for a completely different purpose, and then repurpose it into a piece of art. The shape of one piece may appeal to me; then when I find several more just like it, it becomes an interesting project to put them together in a form that is balanced and attractive. I have created several sculptures using these pieces, and each one has a unique feel to it.
Sunseekers – 2021

Sometimes, inspiration comes when you’ve found a discarded piece from someone else’s mistake. Dan had these pieces bent to somewhat match some pieces of that origin, then decided to try something new with color and powder coating, and have one color fade into another. He loved the way the bright colors turned out. With the height of the pieces, “Sun Seekers” seemed an appropriate name, reminding him of a plant inching its way toward the sun.
