For thousands of years and across innumerable cultures, feathers have represented a connection to the spiritual. They are not only a physical symbol of flight and freedom, but also symbolic of spiritual evolution. Universally, feathers are a positive and uplifting image, bringing to mind freedom, truth, courage, travel, spirituality and more. This feather is hand-forged steel and is finished with an industrial enamel, giving it a durable, weather-resistant finish. I take inspiration from a variety of sources, including architecture and design, culture, history, relationships and nature. I am “hands-on” in every phase of the creative process, and I design, create and install every piece of art I am commissioned to produce.

Meet the Artist

Paul was born in Calgary, AB, on April 25, 1974. When he was six, his family moved to the picturesque community of Crawford Bay, BC. He began his journey in ironwork at the age of 15, when he apprenticed at the Kootenay Forge under the mentorship of John Smith. At 20 years old, he took over the blacksmith operations at Fort Steele, BC. In 2001, at the age of 26, Paul began his own blacksmithing business with six employees. This venture allowed Paul to pursue public art opportunities in and around British Columbia. With 22 years of experience in the trade, his portfolio varies greatly in size, form, and function. He takes inspiration from many sources – from architecture and design to history and nature. His core principle as an artist is to facilitate a spirit of connection. Today, Paul lives with his wife and two children in Cranbrook, and family and community involvement are the most important elements of his life.
