Gedion Nyanhongo

We Lean On Each Other by Gedion Nyanhongo reflects the essential human need for connection, support, and love.

Hand-carved from African Opal stone, the sculpture expresses balance and unity through interdependent forms, each element relying on the other for strength and stability. The piece invites viewers to consider how relationships shape a meaningful life, grounded in mutual care and shared experience.

Nyanhongo’s work is rooted in the traditions of Shona stone sculpture, where form and meaning are closely intertwined. Through smooth, fluid lines and simplified shapes, he communicates ideas that are both personal and universal. We Lean On Each Other continues this tradition, offering a timeless message about partnership, belonging, and the strength found in community.

Born in Zimbabwe, Nyanhongo learned the art of stone carving from his father, Claud Nyanhongo, an original member of the Shona Stone Sculpture Movement. This foundation instilled both technical discipline and a deep respect for cultural storytelling. Today, he works exclusively with indigenous stones from Zimbabwe, including serpentine, springstone, opal, lepidolite, and verdite, carving and polishing each piece entirely by hand using traditional methods.

As his work has evolved, Nyanhongo has helped carry the Shona Stone Sculpture Movement into the present while maintaining a strong connection to its origins. His sculptures bridge generations, honoring the spirit and heritage of his ancestors while sharing their stories with audiences around the world.
