The Lunar Gate and Celestial Gate by Tyler Kimball form a striking dual installation inspired by the balance of night and day.
Light, color, pattern, movement, and depth are central elements in this artist’s work. Drawing on the Standing at seven feet tall, each gate is composed of hundreds of hand-blown glass elements, carefully crafted and assembled to reflect the rhythms of the sky. The Lunar Gate honors the phases of the moon, while the Celestial Gate captures the warmth and movement of the sun—together creating a visual dialogue of yin and yang, light and shadow, push and pull.

Every detail of the work is intentional. From the more than 900 individually blown glass pieces to the painted moon flowers and sculpted sun motifs, each element is designed specifically for these installations. Vitreous paints are fired directly onto the glass, and custom-blown rondels bring texture and dimension, resulting in surfaces that shift and come alive as light moves across them throughout the day.
Light, color, pattern, movement, and depth are central to Kimball’s work. Drawing on the natural optical properties of glass, his installations are designed to engage both natural and artificial light, constantly evolving depending on the viewer’s perspective. Inspired by architecture and pattern, each piece is created to harmonize with its environment while offering a distinct visual identity.
With more than two decades of experience and work spanning over 60 studios worldwide, Kimball brings both technical precision and creative vision to large-scale glass installations. His studio practice emphasizes collaboration, adaptability, and craftsmanship—producing work that not only meets the demands of public spaces but elevates them through thoughtful design and enduring material.
