Joshua Toone

You Found Me by Joshua Toone is a study in motion, balance, and discovery.

Rising vertically, the sculpture combines curved supports with a twisting stainless steel plane, creating a sense of suspended ascent. Light moves across the surface as the form shifts, giving the impression that the piece is still in motion, caught in a precise and intentional moment.

Toone’s work explores the interplay of geometric form and fluid movement. Though constructed from rigid materials, his sculptures often feel dynamic and alive, balancing structure with a sense of spontaneity. In You Found Me, this tension creates a quiet dialogue between control and release, where engineered precision meets organic flow.

Working primarily in steel and stainless steel, Toone draws inspiration from both material contrast and mathematical form. His process blends careful planning with intuitive decision-making, allowing each piece to evolve as it takes shape. The result is work that feels both deliberate and expressive, grounded in craftsmanship while open to interpretation.

Raised in a family deeply connected to the arts, Toone began developing his skills under the guidance of his father, Dan Toone. Over time, he refined his approach to abstract metal sculpture, focusing on geometric exploration and technical precision. His work reflects a continued pursuit of balance between form, movement, and the transformative potential of metal.

‘Cause I Feel the Pull, is made of leftover aluminum pieces. I had a bunch of these pieces and tried rolling one. I loved the look so I kept rolling more. As they piled up I liked the way they looked as they stacked up and I started playing with different variations and combinations of pieces. I love the way that it feels like it has movement and action.

$9,000 – 10’ X 4’ – Aluminum

I love geometric shapes, especially cubes. Crafted of aluminum, “Multiplied” explores the interplay between geometric shapes and spatial relationships. By stacking cubes of different dimensions, it creates a visually dynamic composition that invites viewers to contemplate concepts of balance, symmetry, and perspective.

With Gravity – 2023

“With Gravity” came about when I was able to find some pieces of steel that were headed to the scrap bin. I cleaned them up, then threw them through the roller, and played with them until they felt “done.”

I am the third child of four, and I have three amazing sisters. As I was building this piece, and I saw the three shiny pieces of stainless contrasted against the darker, rougher, crooked piece of steel, I saw a good representation of my sisters and me. My sisters are shiny beacons of goodness, and strong as steel, and they all have been great examples to me in my life. I love them, and I am so grateful that they are my sisters.
