12th of July 1986, Wembley Stadium, London. Queen, touring for the last time, lit up this famous arena under a gorgeous British summer sky. The immortal Freddie Mercury belted out one classic after another including “We are the Champions” to 72,000 pulsating Queen fans. He sported a now iconic yellow leather jacket that made him pop out on the stage and seared himself into the visual memory for all time.

Freddie is an enduring symbol of the underdog rising against all the odds to the very top of the music industry. He was a fighter, an innovator and a master of his craft. He came out of total obscurity and “burn[t] through the sky” like “a supersonic man” into eternity. The powerful lyrics from this song capture some of the timeless magic that he put out into the world: “We are the champions my friend, and we’ll keep on fighting till the end!” This sculpture attempts to capture the indomitable spirit of both the song and the life: both dedicated to celebrating the infinite potential of the human spirit that refuses to abandon hope in the pursuit of a noble dream.

At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, QC, an unknown 14-year-old girl from Romania set the sporting world ablaze when she was awarded the first-ever perfect 10s for several flawless performances, including her routine on the balance beam that inspired this work. Through her artistry, fearlessness and sheer brilliance, Nadia Comăneci captured hearts the world over and inspired an entire generation of gymnasts and fans. Balance and harmony are critical in both gymnastics and art. A beautiful composition requires a careful consideration of geometric shapes and numbers. This composition is coupled with a symbolic celebration of the Olympic podium and medals (gold, silver and bronze), illustrating that there are several shapes that come in 3s.
