Suspended Spring is a study in balance, tension, and quiet motion.

Carved from Colorado Yule marble and set on a custom angled steel stand, the spiral form tips forward as if caught mid-movement. A heavy chain anchors the piece, creating a visual contrast between lift and restraint, where motion feels both imminent and contained.

The sculpture explores the relationship between softness and strength. Though carved from stone, the form suggests fluidity and touch, inviting the viewer to reconsider the physical limits of the material. The natural dolomite vein runs through the spiral like a line of time, connecting the narrow beginning to the fuller end and reinforcing a sense of gradual growth and stored energy.

Working across materials including stone, clay, wood, and foam, the artist is particularly drawn to carving. Their practice focuses on transforming hard materials into forms that feel organic and approachable. Recent work has expanded into combining stone with steel, using the contrast to explore new structural and visual possibilities.

With formal training in sculpture and ceramics from Northern Illinois University, the artist continues to develop a body of work that emphasizes material exploration, balance, and the tension between weight and movement.

Inquire about this piece

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. In this piece, if the block were split in half, the eyes would align perfectly, emphasizing symmetry and balance. The stylized form of the eyes is intentional, allowing the viewer to focus on emotion and interpretation rather than being distracted by excessive detail. My goal is for the viewer to see their own life, experiences, and emotions reflected in the eyes of the stone.

$9,600 – 19” X 13” X 15” – Colorado Yule Marble

As an artist, I derive immense pleasure from creating works that offer the illusion of softness and pliancy while being meticulously sculpted from the unyielding medium of marble. This juxtaposition between the fragility of the subject matter and the enduring nature of the material serves as a metaphor for the complex interplay between transience and permanence in our lives.

The Lock Washer – 2023

“The Lock Washer” is a loose representation of a metal lock washer. It is made from Yule marble, locked down by a steel nut and bolt running through a rusted steel chain holding down the piece. This stone is semi-unique because it has a vein of dolomite running through it; not something you see a lot of coming out of a Colorado Yule mine.

Soft Serve – 2022

Soft Serve is a playful interpretation of the wonderful twists and turns of soft-serve ice cream. Who doesn’t love ice cream? I enjoy producing work that has the illusion of being soft but is as hard as marble.

The First Snow – 2021

This abstract piece represents winter’s first snow. The first snow of the season is absorbing to Michael because of the way it creates softer, rounder shapes of the objects it covers, and the fact that when the sun hits the snow, it glistens and creates a sense of untouched purity. This sculpture was crafted from Colorado Yule marble, a material known for an unusual crystalline structure that, when sanded to the correct grit, sparkles like snow in the light.
